Dance as if it were the last time. Since Last Work is not Ohad Naharin’s ultimate creation, the title may simply be a way to describe the piece’s intensity. This manifesto of a piece by a world-famous choreographer is a combination of physical engagement, political determination, instinctive body language and profound messages.
Last Work was added to the repertoire because the piece develops Naharin’s spirit to the absolute fullest while being slightly different from the rest of his work, which had a profound influence on the field of dance overall. This piece includes the signature, unique body language devised by the choreographer aptly nicknamed Mr Gaga, which draws from the emotional state of the dancers to deploy instinctive, undulating movements. It is replete with powerful images and haunting themes such as the world’s constant conflicts, the place of individuals within a group or the vital energy of parties. More dreamlike and crepuscular than Naharin’s other pieces, Last Work allows the dancers’ uniqueness to strive, which makes it a perfect fit for the virtuoso dancers of the Lyon Opera Ballet.
