Verdi’s unparalleled masterpiece La forza del destino is back to the Lyon Opera for the first time in 43 years. The tragic plot of this dazzling piece is centered around the journey of two lovers struggling against their inescapable fate. This show directed by rising star Ersan Mondtag is performed by Elena Guseva, Riccardo Massi, Igor Golovatenko and Michele Pertusi.
Seville, 18th century: although her family forbids her to, Donna Leonora is in love with Don Alvaro. Her father’s accidental death puts a curse on the couple while Don Carlo, Leonora’s brother, seeks stubborn and cruel revenge.
In 1869, La forza del destino’s majestic arias and strong dramatic essence made it the first of a long series of acclaimed pieces by Verdi. Replete with thrilling romantic moments and vast picturesque scenes mixing grandeur with grotesque, the piece portrays two lovers facing their relentless fate, leading to mind-boggling twists and deathly events.
Working alongside Daniele Rustioni – the ideal man for the job –, director Ersan Mondtag, who’s still too little-known in France, offered an utterly bold take on La forza del destino.
