Following Adriana Lecouvreur in 2023, the Lyon Opera Orchestra and Choir are happily carrying on their exploration of the greatest pieces from the verismo repertoire with Andrea Chénier, Umberto Giordano’s rousing success. The lead is sung by brilliant tenor Riccardo Massi, a regular of the world’s greatest stages from London to New York.
One of the most intense opera scores of the 19th century, Andrea Chénier was met with acclaim when it premiered in 1896 at the Teatro alla Scala. The striking realism that colours its musical and literary style sets the backdrop for the story of French poet André Chénier. This strong supporter of revolutionary ideas falls victim to a system which he lucidly condemns for its authoritarian outcome. A fatal love triangle is drawn between young aristocrat Maddalena di Coigny, former servant Carlo Gérard, and our rebel artist, caught up in the political turmoil of the late 18th century. An exceptional trio, already beloved by the Lyon audience, is all set to enchant the Auditorium, with international stars Anna Pirozzi, Amartuvshin Enkhbat and Riccardo Massi. This bound-for-success show is brilliantly conducted by Daniele Rustioni, a true aficionado of this repertoire.
