While Antonio Zambujo is recognised in Portugal as being the great new voice of Fado, he started out with the cante alentejano of his native region, and it was then thanks to his cover versions of Chico Buarque, his friend and mentor, that he became known to the general public in Brazil. Caetano Veloso claims that, on listening to his voice “you cannot stop yourself from shivering and weeping”. This is because, over and above any school or style, Zambujo is above all a great voice. His solo concerts are intimate masses, tending of course towards Fado, but also allowing for incursions into his much-loved Brazilian repertoire. He even permits himself an occasional cover of a number by Serge Gainsbourg. The best seller of albums in Portugal, Zambujo has been nominated for a Latin Grammy and awarded a Golden Globe as the best artist.
