Synopsis
Babe Williams, a union representative in an Iowa pajama factory, has a crush on the new foreman, Sid Sorokin, who has also set his sights on her. But when the employees demand a pay increase of 7.5 cents per hour, their romance is severely undermined by the reality of the social struggle.
Like a nod to our time
Director George Abbott had no idea that turning Richard Bissell's short story 7 1/2 Cents into a musical would prove so successful. Surrounded by a dream team, including Jerome Robbins for the staging, musical hitmakers Richard Adler and Jerry Ross, and Bob Fosse for the choreography, he ended up with the greatest success of 1954 on Broadway! A stroke of genius based on a love story thwarted by social demands, a gallery of irresistible characters and music brimming with an infectious energy. This version from director Jean Lacornerie and choreographer Raphaël Cottin, resonates strongly with the concerns of our time. While respecting the spirit of the original, Musical Director Gérard Lecointe gives us the very best version of this lively score.
