Synopsis
In 1861, some very young prisoners were sent to a penal colony on the wildest and most beautiful of the Golden Islands in the Mediterranean. Director Pauline Laidet gives words, bodies and a voice to this true story which tells the daily life of children in a pitiless universe, interspersed with moments of solidarity and sweetness.
An opera for children
The work is based on the novel by Claude Gritti, while the music is by Isabelle Aboulker, considered to be one of the greatest composers of opera for the young. A smooth and melancholy score of clear and childlike voices, tinged with the chirping of cicadas and the sound of the waves.
The Maîtrise de l'Opéra
This school for singing and the performing arts aims to produce high-level choirs (both for children and teenagers) as well as young solo singers. They even get to play leading roles in some operas, as is the case here in Les Enfants du Levant.
