“I knew nothing of life’s cares then.” The warm tones of Stéphane Degout recount the loves and heartbreak of Mahler’s Wayfarer.
Few opera singers are passionate about the whole repertoire, from baroque to contemporary, while also being capable of working to the exacting standards of the German Lied and French Mélodie. Lyon’s Stéphane Degout, however, is one of them. He returns to his home town to perform Mahler’s Songs of a Wayfarer, lending his voice to the legend of the Wanderer, as celebrated by both Schubert and Mahler. Constantly on the move, a restless traveller, Degout’s Wayfarer carries with him all the pain of our past disappointments and our—constantly disappointed—hopes of a better future.
