Casuarina, a samba group from Rio, founded 15 years ago in the Lapa quarter, is part of a new generation of cariocas who have grown up with rock, jazz or else forró. They all rediscovered samba in its most rootsy aspect and have helped to dust it off, while staying far away from the clichés of a music which is too often represented using a flashy exoticism or in overly smooth productions. With 7 albums and several prizes under their belt (“Best Samba Group” in 2010 and 2017 in the Brazilian Music Awards), Casuarina has today become the icon of a new generation of samba carioca.
