In 2016, Alessandro Sciarroni created FOLK-S, a piece inspired by Schuhplattler, a Bavarian folk dance in which dancers beat their shoes, thighs and calves with their hands, creating percussion while dancing. To recreate this at the opera house, Sciarroni has produced The Collection, in which this traditional technique is taught to ballet dancers. Reduced to its simplest form, Schuhplattler becomes a syntax to be reconfigured, a language that each dancer is free to use to reshape space and time. Starting from an obsessive rhythmic sequence that repeats endlessly, figures emerge that follow their own logic. The group transforms like organic matter, constantly reassembling itself. Between control and autonomy, play and trance, The Collection offers an extreme experience of multiple variations on a traditional form through to its exhaustion.
