From the powerful swell celebrated by Debussy to the lyrical and passionate poems set to music by Chausson, the sea is the common thread running through this programme.
“Sounds and scents turn in the evening air.” This line by Baudelaire could be said to sum up this entirely French programme combining the marine element exalted by Debussy and Chausson with Messiaen’s Les Offrandes oubliées (The Forgotten Offerings). Whether it is highlighting the nature so dear to Debussy or Messiaen’s religious fervor, this concert is first and foremost a hymn to the French orchestra, magnified by the dazzling voice of mezzo-soprano Aude Éxtremo.
